(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - LaGrange College, under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach David Kelton, was picked to win the USA South Athletic Conference 2017 baseball title in the preseason coaches poll. Last spring, the Panthers placed tied for second after the conclusion of the regular season and was one of the final three teams remaining in the USA South Baseball Tournament. LaGrange received seven of 11 first-place votes and 94 points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting for the USA South preseason poll.
Ferrum College, defending USA South regular season champions, ranked second in the poll with 87 points and three first place votes. Huntingdon College, defending USA South Tournament champions, placed third in the voting with 74 while Maryville College wasn't far behind in fourth with 72 points. Methodist University and N.C. Wesleyan College rounded out the top-half of the poll in fifth and sixth with 63 and 57 points, respectively, while Covenant College placed seventh with 55 points and the remaining first place vote.
The 2017 campaign gets underway on Friday, February 3rd as Covenant, Greensboro College, Huntingdon and William Peace University are in action.
The 2017 USA South Baseball Tournament will be played April 12-15 at LaGrange's Phil Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field in LaGrange, Georgia as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival, hosted by the City of LaGrange and Troup County. The top-eight teams following regular season play will advance to the double-elimination tournament.
