The USA South Athletic Conference men's lacrosse coaches have released their inaugural 2018 preseason poll. The sport is sponsored for the first time in League history. Placing tied atop the poll was Ferrum College, led by first-year head coach Michael Baggetta, and Methodist University, under the direction of Head Coach Zach Nedbalski, in his fifth year. The Panthers are coming off a 6-12 season while the Monarchs posted a 15-3 record in 2017. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.
Both Ferrum and Methodist received 31 total points and three first place votes to finish tied in the rankings. Placing third in the poll with 30 points and the remaining first place vote was Huntingdon College. In fourth place with 20 points was Piedmont College followed by Greensboro College in fifth with 18 points. William Peace University (11 points) and Averett University (six points) rounded out the poll in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
In addition to the USA South sponsoring the sport of men's lacrosse for the first time this season, the Conference welcomes new League men's lacrosse-playing members Brevard College and Pfeiffer University. Neither team will be included in the poll as they are each reclassifying from Division II and are not eligible for championship honors this season.
The 2018 season gets underway on Saturday, February 3 as Brevard is in action.
The 2018 USA South Men's Lacrosse Tournament will feature the top-four seeded teams and take place at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange, Georgia on April 14-15 as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival hosted by the City of LaGrange and Troup County.
