2018 USA South Men's Lacrosse Awards Announced

The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its inaugural 2018 All-Conference awards for men's lacrosse. Huntingdon College's Sam Hitt was named Player of the Year while his coach, Andrew Carey earned Coach of the Year honors. In addition, William Peace University's Austin Abourjilie collected Rookie of the Year accolades to round out the individual honorees. Finally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school.

All honors were determined by votes from the men's lacrosse coach at each institution.

Hitt, a junior midfielder/faceoff specialist Finksburg, Maryland was a force controlling the start of play by earning the most faceoff victories in the Conference. Hitt currently has collected 218-of-311 (70%) faceoffs which is 67 more than the second place total. He also currently leads the USA South with 122 ground balls, 37 more than the next-highest total. In addition, Hitt scored four goals and assisted on four more. In games versus League opposition-only, Hitt once again had the highest faceoff (79-of-109) and ground ball (42) totals. For his efforts, Hitt earned First Team All-Conference accolades as a faceoff specialist. Finally, he was named USA South Defensive Player of the Week four times this spring.

Abourjilie, a freshman attack from Greensboro, North Carolina currently has compiled team-highs of 38 points and 27 goals while adding 11 assists. He has gathered nine ground balls and caused seven turnovers. In USA South-play, Abourjilie turned up his offense as he led the League with 25 points and nine assists to go along with 16 goals which ranked second in the Conference. For his efforts, Abourjilie earned First Team All-Conference honors at attack this season. Finally, he was named USA South Rookie of the Week once this spring.

In his seventh season at Huntingdon, Carey collects the first men's lacrosse coach of the year honor handed out by the USA South. He has led the Hawks to a 14-2 overall record which is a program record for wins in a season. Picked to finish third by the League coaches in the preseason, Huntingdon compiled a perfect 6-0 record in USA South play to give the Hawks the regular season title. Carey now takes his squad into the semifinals of the USA South Tournament as the top-seeded team.
