Christopher Newport Wins USA South Men's Soccer Tournament Via Penalty Kicks

(MARTINSVILLE, Va.) - The 2009 USA South Men's Soccer Tournament championship match took place on Saturday, November 7 in Martinsville, Virginia at the Smith River Sports Complex as top-seeded Christopher Newport University captured the title by besting second-seeded N.C. Wesleyan College in penalty kicks.

CNU jumped in front early with a goal in the sixth minute by Brian Lybert off of a pass from Nao Masuda. N.C. Wesleyan tied the score in the 50th minute when Arkadiusz Trochowski hammered in a free kick. Neither team scored again during regulation time or through two ten-minute overtime periods meaning penalty kicks would determine the champion. The Captains converted on four of their five chances while the Bishops only scored twice.

The Captains collected the program's first-ever tournament crown and earn the USA South's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
