2017 USA South Men's Tennis Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2017 All-Conference awards for men's tennis. N.C. Wesleyan College's Sebastian Sikh was named Player of the Year, Averett University's Lauri Soome collected Rookie of the Year while Covenant College's John Hirte earned Coach of the Year. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school.

All awards are voted on by the men's tennis coach at each institution. The divisional team voting is completed only by those coaches in the particular division. The all-conference and individual award voting is completed by all coaches.

Sikh, a junior from Eskilstuna, Sweden adds USA South Player of the Year to his career awards as he was named Rookie of the Year in 2015. Playing nearly the entire season at the number-one singles position, Sikh posted a 16-5 overall record with a 7-0 mark versus USA South opposition. Harvie is currently the sixth ranked player in the ITA Division III Atlantic South Region rankings. At the top doubles spot this season, Sikh has earned a 13-8 overall record with a 7-1 mark in League action. For his efforts, Sikh earned First Team All-Conference honors for the third consecutive year as well as First Team East Division accolades. Finally, he collected USA South Player of the Week honors three times this spring.

A freshman from Kuopio, Finland, Soome has compiled a 10-6 overall record with a 4-2 mark in USA South action while playing primarily at the number-two singles position this season. In doubles play, Soome has stayed at the number-one position, earning a 13-3 overall record with a 5-1 mark in League play. For his efforts this season, he collected First Team East Division honors. Finally, Soome was named USA South Rookie of the Week once this year.

Hirte, in his fifth year as the head coach of Covenant, received his second career USA South Men's Tennis Coach of the Year honor. He has guided the Scots to a 12-9 overall record and a 7-1 Conference mark which was good for a share of the West Division Conference title, the first League title in program history. Additionally, the 12 overall wins and seven Conference victories set program records for a single-season. Hirte will now take his squad into the USA South Tournament as the West Division top-seeded team.
