Christopher Newport Selected to Host NCAA Softball Regional
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The NCAA announced last week that Christopher Newport University will be one of eight Regional Tournament sites for the 2012 NCAA Softball Championships. The NCAA Division III Softball Committee announced the pre-determined Regional sites and selections for the championship will be announced during the selection show Monday, May 7, streamed live on NCAA.com.
Christopher Newport hosted its first NCAA Softball Regional in 2010, when the Captains won and advanced to its first ever NCAA Championships appearance. This year, CNU will also host a 2012 NCAA Baseball Regional on campus, one of three schools hosting both this year (Eastern Conn State & Kean).
Six regional sites will have eight teams competing to advance while seven will compete at one regional site and six teams will compete at another regional site. The eight-team regionals will be held May 10-14, and the six- and seven-team regionals will be held May 11-14. All regional sites will use a double-elimination format.
The finals, hosted by the City of Salem and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, will be held May 18-22 at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
