Christopher Newport Picked to Capture USA South Women's Soccer Title

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) – Christopher Newport University, under the direction of third-year Head Coach Ruth Keegan, was picked in the preseason coaches' poll to win the USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer title in 2010. The Captains are the defending USA South Tournament Champions. Last season's tournament crown was the program's fourth in the last six years. This fall, CNU will attempt to improve on its second place regular season finish from a season ago.

Christopher Newport received eight of ten first place votes (80 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Meredith College, the defending USA South Regular Season Champions, finished second in the balloting with 74 points and the remaining two first place votes. In third place, Greensboro College and Shenandoah University shared the spot with 58 points each. Rounding out the top-half of the poll was Methodist University with 49 points.

The women's soccer regular season gets underway on Wednesday, September 1 when five of the league's ten teams face non-conference opponents.

The USA South Athletic Conference Tournament will once again head to Martinsville, Virginia as the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority will host the 2010 Men's and Women's Soccer semifinals and finals. The contests will be held at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Virginia on November 5 and 6. This will be the second of a two-year commitment in Martinsville. The first round games of the tournaments will continue to be held on the campuses of the higher seeded team.
