Peace Women's Soccer Honors Private Sellers Prior to Game

Cary, N.C. – The William Peace Pacers honored Private First Class Austin Sellers prior to Saturday's soccer game with the Piedmont Lions. Sellers, husband of Pacers freshman Cayla Monroe-Sellers, is in the United States Marine Corps and will be deployed to Afghanistan in less than a month. Sellers will serve a seven-month deployment to serve as a lead gunner in a route clearance platoon.

Private Sellers served as an honorary captain for the match and was presented a William Peace University Women's Soccer t-shirt by the coaching staff. Pacers captains Reba Hodge, Melissa Moran and Anne Tucker Rodgers presented Private Sellers with a gift card on behalf of the team and also prepared a care package for Sellers to take with him when he goes overseas.

"It was touching to know my teammates, many of whom I just met, were there for us," Monore-Sellers said. "It was great to see that coach cares enough to do this for us."

The couple was married in June of 2012 and did not realize a deployment overseas was coming. Just a month later, Private Sellers got word that he was going to Afghanistan. Now Monroe-Sellers, in addition to the usual worries of a college student adjusting to her first year, has even more on her plate.

"I'm still going to play soccer," Monroe-Sellers said. "After soccer I plan to play on the tennis team. Basically I'm just going to try and stay busy."

Unfortunately, the Pacers were unable to cap the day off with a win, as they fell to the Lions by a 7-0 margin.

Peace returns with another home game on Saturday, as it hosts the LaGrange Panthers at 2:00 PM.
