USA South 2016 Women's Soccer Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2016 All-Conference awards for women's soccer. A total of 58 student-athletes have earned honors. Salem College's Brooke Bukas was named Player of the Year, Ferrum College's Payton Stuart collected Rookie of the Year accolades while Meredith College's Paul Smith earn Coach of the Year honors to round out the individual accolades. Additionally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school.

All awards are voted on by the women's soccer coach at each institution. The divisional team voting is completed only by those coaches in the particular division. The all-conference and individual award voting is completed by all coaches.

Bukas, a Winston-Salem, North Carolina junior forward, becomes the first player in Salem women's soccer history to be named USA South Player of the Year. In Salem's first year in the League, she also becomes the first Spirit to collect a USA South individual award. For the year, Bukas as totaled ten goals and four assists for 24 points including three game-winning-goals. Each of her assists came versus Conference opposition along with eight goals. In games versus USA South teams who qualified for the League Tournament, Bukas scored eight goals and tallied three assists. For her efforts this season, Bukas was named First Team All-Conference, as well as First Team West Division as a forward. Finally, she was selected as USA South Player of the Week once this year.

Stuart, freshman forward from Christiansburg, Virginia, becomes just the second Panther to be named USA South Rookie of the Year, joining Jennifer Dodson (1998). She is currently tied for second in two Conference offensive statistical categories with 15 goals scored and 34 points while tied for the League-lead in game-winning-goals with six. In USA South-only contests, Stuart led the Conference in goals scored (11), points (26) and was tied in game-winning-goals (5). She was named First Team All-Conference, as well as First Team East Division this fall as a forward. Finally, Stuart collected USA South Rookie of the Week accolades three times this season.

Smith, in his 15th season as the head of the Avenging Angels, earns his fourth-career and third consecutive USA South Women's Soccer Coach of the Year award. This season, he led his team to the USA South Regular Season East Division Championship. This is Meredith's third straight League Regular Season championship and the program's fourth title all-time. The Avenging Angels currently sport a 11-5 overall record and compiled a 10-3 Conference mark. Smith now takes his team into the USA South Women's Soccer Tournament as the East Division's top seed.
