USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 24, 2018

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Otis Porter, Huntingdon - The senior wide receiver from Montgomery, Alabama caught three touchdown passes in a 38-35 loss to Thomas More. Porter hauled in five receptions for 153 yards including a long catch of 62 yards. Also Nominated: None.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Cam Perkins, LaGrange - The freshman quarterback from Loganville, Georgia accumulated 105 yards of total offense and scored three touchdowns in a 42-13 win over Apprentice. Perkins was 1-for-4 passing for 17 yards while carrying the ball seven times for 88 yards, including a new single-game school record three touchdowns by a quarterback. Additionally, he broke off a 63-yard touchdown run which was the second-longest scamper by a quarterback in program history. Also Nominated: None.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Charlie Jones, Huntingdon
 - The Fairhope, Alabama senior defensive back recorded nine tackles and grabbed an interception in a 38-35 loss to Thomas More. Jones tallied eight solo tackles while his interception came deep in Huntingdon territory in the fourth quarter and led to a go-ahead touchdown with less than three minutes remaining. Also Nominated: Axel Easter, Brevard.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Zac Ellison, Greensboro - The sophomore punter from Greensboro, North Carolina punted the ball 12 times for an average of 39.0 yards in an 81-0 loss to Ferrum. Ellison's long punt traveled 51 yards. Also Nominated: None.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Ivan Ponce, William Peace - The freshman forward from Clinton, North Carolina was directly involved in all three game-winning goals of a 3-0 week for the Pacers versus USA South competition. Ponce tallied four goals and one assist in the three victories. In a 1-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Ponce scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute. In a 3-0 win over LaGrange, Ponce assisted on the eventual game-winner while also scoring a goal of his own. Finally, in a 2-0 win over Pfeiffer, Ponce notched the only goals of the match within 32 seconds of each other. Also Nominated: Jordy Briceno, Greensboro; Anthony Buzzeo, Covenant; Cameron Earls, Piedmont; Ryan Jorgensen, Maryville; Kelan LeBlanc, Huntingdon; Sheriff Secka, N.C. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Patrick Hall, Brevard - The junior goalkeeper from Pikeville, North Carolina posted a shutout in his and the team's only action last week, a 1-0 victory over Guilford. Hall stopped all eight shots he faced to grab the win. Also Nominated: Ian Addison, Piedmont; Austin Bramhall, Averett; Nate Long, Maryville; Jacob Smith, William Peace.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Ashley Hughes, Brevard - The Charlotte, North Carolina senior midfielder tallied five goals and two assists in a 3-0 week for the Tornados versus USA South members. In a 2-1 win over Salem, Hughes scored the game's first goal in the first minute. In a 7-0 victory over Berea, Hughes notched a hat-trick of three goals to go along with one assist. Finally, in a 2-0 win over Averett, Hughes was involved in both of the match's goals as she assisted on the first before scoring one of her own later. for the Scots. Also Nominated: Madeline Capel, Pfeiffer; Caitlynn Croft, Agnes Scott; Maddie Crumpton, Salem; Emily Meador, Averett; Anna Rae Porcelli, Greensboro; Cassidy Reich, Piedmont.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Hannah Weatherall, Brevard - The Bourg, Louisiana sophomore goalkeeper posted a 2-0 record in goal last week as the Tornados earned three wins versus USA South members. In 180 minutes in goal, Weatherall did not allowed just one score as she stopped ten shots. In a 2-1 win over Salem, Weatherall made six saves. In a 7-0 victory over Berea, Weatherall stopped all four shots she faced to post the shutout. Also Nominated: Courtney Chaplin, Salem; Kelsey Emrich, Greensboro; Kaley Hyatt, Pfeiffer; Rachel Lemay, Covenant; Madison Thornton, Wesleyan.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Dynasty Burchett, LaGrange - The Yulee, Florida freshman forward notched two goals and two assists in a 1-1 week for the Panthers. In a 4-0 loss to Southern Virginia, Burchett was held without a shot. In a 7-0 win over Sweet Briar, Burchett scored twice, her first career multi-goal game, and added two assists. Also Nominated: McKaley Boston, Greensboro; Thania Hernandez, Averett; Audrey Mecklenburg, Wesleyan; Abbie Petrosky, Brevard.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Brienna Laskowski, William Peace - The sophomore right side/setter from Albermarle, North Carolina averaged 3.20 kills, with a .276 hitting percentage, 3.80 assists and 2.07 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 4-0 record over the past two weeks. In a 3-1 win over Ferrum, posted a triple-double of 14 assists, 11 digs and ten kills. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Laskowski notched a double-double of 11 assists and ten kills with five digs and three service aces. In a 3-0 victory over USA South rival Mary Baldwin, Laskowski contributed 11 assists, seven kills, three blocks, one dig and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-2 win over USA South foe Salem, Laskowski tallied a triple-doublw of 21 kills, 21 assists and 14 digs to go along with three service aces. Also Nominated: Caroline Corey, Meredith; Hannah Delcamp, Salem; Sarah Egbers, Greensboro; Katherine Gonterman, Berea; McKenzie Miller, Averett; Sophie Puertas, Covenant; Alina Roberts, Piedmont; Brianne Sidner, Maryville; Amy Tyma, Huntingdon.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Emily Skoglund, Meredith - The junior defensive specialist from Asheboro, North Carolina averaged 5.00 digs per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Averett, Skoglund posted ten digs and two assists. In a 3-0 victory over Pfeiffer, Skoglund contributed 14 digs, two service aces and one assist. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Greensboro, Skoglund notched 21 digs and two assists. Also Nominated: Kristin Barnes, Berea; Emma Gray Beacham, Pfeiffer; Tori Belcher, Greensboro; Emily Braxton, William Peace; Lainey Choiniere, Piedmont; Addison Genard, Huntingdon; Maggie Hawks, Salem; Devin Lassiter, N.C. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Meredith Bonee, Maryville - The freshman setter/right side from Knoxville, Tennessee averaged 4.37 assists, 2.63 digs and 1.74 kills per set as the Scots posted a 4-1 record last week. In a 3-2 loss to USA South foe Covenant, Bonee posted a double-double with 17 assists and 17 digs to go along with seven kills, two service aces and one block. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Agnes Scott, Bonee totaled 13 assists, four kills, three digs, two service aces and one block in two sets played. In a 3-0 victory over Johnson (TN), Bonee contributed 15 assists, nine digs and eight kills. In a 3-1 win over Guilford, Bonee tallied 21 assists, nine digs, seven kills, two service aces and one block. Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Logan McKenzie, Berea - The junior from Athens, Tennessee placed first out of 104 runners at the Berea College Mike & Mary Kay Invitational on September 15. McKenzie completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:06 helping the Mountaineers to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Bryce Griggs, Piedmont; Nate Collins, Covenant; Devon Williams, Pfeiffer; Gavin Morgan, Brevard.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Nate Collins, Covenant - The freshman from Birmingham, Alabama placed eighth out of 104 runners at the Berea College Mike & Mary Kay Invitational on September 15. Collins completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 27:48 helping the Scots to a second place team finish. Also Nominated: Connor Moranos, Piedmont; Gavin Morgan, Brevard.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Lilly Smith, Covenant - The senior from Weaverville, North Carolina placed first out of 87 runners at the Berea College Mike & Mary Kay Invitational on September 15. Smith completed the 5,000-meter course in a personal-best time of 19:41, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Sophia Bethel, Piedmont; Meghan Miller, Pfeiffer; Macy Brinson, Meredith. 

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
S.K. Lipperd, Covenant - The freshman from Birmingham, Alabama placed third out of 87 runners at the Berea College Mike & Mary Kay Invitational on September 15. Lipperd completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:07, helping the Scots to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Sophia Bethel, Piedmont.
