USA South Athletes of the Week - Apr. 8, 2019

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Cedrick Kornegay, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior outfielder from Faison, North Carolina was a combined 9-for-17 (.529) with a .500 on-base percentage, a .824 slugging percentage, five runs scored, six RBI, three doubles, one triple and one stolen base in N.C. Wesleyan's 3-1 week. In an 8-7, ten-inning, loss to eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon, Kornegay was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one double and one stolen base. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jordan Davis, Maryville - The junior from Maryville, Tennessee tossed a complete-game shutout, in a 3-0 win over USA South foe William Peace in his only appearance on the mound for the Scots last week. Davis allowed just four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts en route to the victory. Also Nominated: Seth Beard, Methodist; Tanner Bradshaw, Averett; Sam Carpenter, Piedmont; Nate Gardner, N.C. Baseball Rookie of the Week
Brett Kernodle, Covenant - The freshman outfielder from Little Rock, Arkansas went a combined 5-for-10 (.500) with a .545 on-base percentage, a .600 slugging percentage, two runs scored, two RBI, one double, one walk and one stolen base in a winless week for the Scots. In a 9-8 loss to Berry, Kernodle was 2-for-4 with one run scored, one walk and one stolen base. In three losses to USA South foe, nationally-ranked Piedmont, Kernodle appeared in two games and was a combined 3-for-6 with one run scored, two RBI and one double. Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Matthew Scavotto, Brevard - The freshman from Charlotte, North Carolina came on in relief to pitch five shutout innings, keeping the Tornados in the game, a 4-1 loss to USA South foe, nationally-ranked Methodist, in his only appearance last week. Scavotto tossed the final five innings of the game and allowed just one hit with two walks. Also Nominated: DJ Cooper, Maryville; Tucker Duke, Huntingdon; Avery Spicer, Averett.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Taylor Campbell, Maryville - The sophomore infielder from Afton, Tennessee went a combined 5-for-6 (.833) with a .857 on-base percentage, a 1.167 slugging percentage, three runs scored, four RBI, two doubles and one walk in a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Berea in the only contests last week for the Scots. Wesleyan; Amanda Dacunto, Salem; Madyson Gibbins, Covenant; Annelise Hackney, Berea; Mariann Kennison, Piedmont; Hannah Key, Methodist; Taylor Long, LaGrange; Alyssa Singleterry, Huntingdon; Hannah Thompson, Averett; Emily White, Brevard.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Miranda Barker, Salem - The Creedmoor, North Carolina sophomore earned a 4-0 record with one save last week in five appearances, two starts, for the Spirits in the circle. She tossed a total of 24.1 shutout innings, allowing 15 hits and four walks with 30 strikeouts. Barker collected wins over Ferrum as well as USA South foes Greensboro and Mary Baldwin. The Conference wins were both complete-game shutouts. Also Nominated: Taylor Bailey, Averett; Kory Best, Piedmont; Beth Braswell, N.C. Softball Rookie of the Week
KayLeigh Fitzgerald, Agnes Scott - The first-year catcher from Dalton, Georgia was a combined 8-for-14 (.571) with a .571 on-base percentage, a 1.214 slugging percentage, five runs scored, seven RBI, three home runs and two stolen bases in a 1-3 week for the Scotties versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader split with LaGrange, Fitzgerald was a combined 3-for-7 with one run scored, four RBI and one home run. In two losses versus Berea, Fitzgerald was a combined 5-for-9 with four runs scored, three RBI, two home runs and two stolen bases. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Sarah Gundlach, Meredith - The freshman from Midlothian, Virginia posted a 3-1 record last week in four appearances, three starts, for the Avenging Angels in the circle. She tossed a total of 19.2 innings, allowing three runs (1.07 ERA) on 14 hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. In three games versus USA South opposition, Gundlach was 3-0 and did not allow a run in 18 innings pitched. Her lone loss was against top-ranked Christopher Newport. Also Nominated: Hannah Thompson, Averett; Kayla Spinks, Agnes Scott.

 

MEN'S LACROSSE

Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Cade Crews, Methodist - The sophomore midfielder from Carrollton, Georgia totaled eight points on six goals and two assists in a 14-11 win over USA South foe Greensboro in the Monarchs' only game last week. Crews also added a caused turnover in the victory. Also Nominated: Mason Foy, Averett; Adrian Harper, Huntingdon; Brady Jenks, Piedmont; Jackson McKaig, Brevard; Michael Meley, Greensboro; Jared Nelson, Pfeiffer; Walker Rice, William Peace.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Murphy, Huntingdon - The McDonough, Georgia senior goalkeeper earned the win in an 18-7 victory over USA South foe Pfeiffer in the Hawks' only contest of last week. Murphy stopped 15 shots and collected three ground balls and caused one turnover. Also Nominated: Zach Czulada, Piedmont; Sam Garrett, Averett; Robert Kokal, Brevard; Drew Miller, William Peace; Liam Von Hoene, Methodist.

Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Avery Jenks, Piedmont - The freshman attack from Peachtree City, Georgia totaled four points on three goals and one assist in a 13-9 win over USA South foe Brevard in the Lions' only contest last week. Jenks also added five ground balls and one caused turnover in the victory. Also Nominated: Mark Chatt, Methodist; Mason Foy, Averett; Brayden Puckett, Huntingdon.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week
Kara Whitson, Greensboro - The senior attacker from Winston-Salem, North Carolina totaled 20 points on 19 goals and one assist with 13 draw controls, seven ground balls and one caused turnovers in a 2-0 week for the Pride. In an 18-14 win over Ferrum, Whitson scored seven times with nine draw controls, six ground balls and one caused turnovers. In a 16-14 victory over USA South foe Huntingdon, Whitson tied the Conference single-game record with 12 goals scored to go along with one assist, four draw controls and one ground ball. Also Nominated: Meagan Bourque, Pfeiffer; Ali Cucinotta, N.C. Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Sarah Arbes, Meredith - The senior midfielder from Apex, North Carolina totaled 14 draw controls, eight ground balls and six caused turnovers to go along with one goal and one assist as the Avenging Angels posted a 1-1 record last week. In a 24-1 win over USA South foe Averett, Arbes collected five draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers to go along with one goal and one assist. In a 20-10 loss to Randolph-Macon, Arbes tallied nine draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Katy Brown, Piedmont; Millenia Crespo, N.C. Wesleyan; Sada Hollowell, Greensboro; Breanne Sawall, Averett; Hannah Slone, William Peace.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Dana Florian, William Peace - The freshman midfielder from Raleigh, North Carolina tallied scored seven goals in a 21-20, overtime, win over USA South foe Methodist, the only contest last week for the Pacers. Florian also added seven draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the victory. Also Nominated: Olivia Blake, Meredith; Courtney DeLone, Averett; Lily Eisenhart, Methodist; Sada Hollowell, Greensboro; Grace Look, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Roberto Puig, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from Malaga, Spain earned a 2-0 singles record and a 1-1 doubles mark last week for the Battling Bishops. Puig collected singles victories over opponents from USA South foe Averett at the number-one spot and nationally-ranked College of New Jersey at the number-two position. In doubles, at the top-position, Puig teamed with Giannis Brokakis to earn a win over Averett. Also Nominated: Tom Mittring , Brevard; Andrew Chitty, Piedmont; Hayden Wilfong, Methodist.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Juan Vallejo, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Asuncion, Paraguay earned a 2-0 singles record at both the number-three singles and doubles positions last week for the Battling Bishops. The victories in singles came over opponents from USA South foe Averett and nationally-ranked College of New Jersey. In doubles, Vallejo teamed with two different partners to earn the two wins. Also Nominated: E.J. Stolmeijer, Methodist; Houston Medlock, Piedmont; Tyler Kelly, Covenant; Tyler Frazee, Brevard.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Milena Amedieva, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Samarkand, Uzbekistan earned a 2-0 singles and doubles record last week for the Battling Bishops. Amedieva collected singles victories over the 21st-ranked player in the country, USA South foe Averett's Heidi Sarkkinen, as well as an opponent from nationally-ranked College of New Jersey. In doubles, Amedieva teamed with Fariza Abdulloeva to earn the two wins. Also Nominated: Taylor Jackson, Methodist; Brittney Brown, Meredith; Caroline Connelly, Piedmont; Heidi Sarkkinen, Averett; Savannah Bain, Maryville; Samantha Sepe, Brevard; Josie Waddell, Huntingdon.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week

Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Jeremy Prichard, Methodist - The senior from Havelock, North Carolina competed at the Elon Invitational last week in the 400 meter hurdles. He posted a time of 53.44 which is currently the third best in the nation. Also Nominated: Logan McKenzie, Berea; Alvin Jacobs, Piedmont; Antuan Crowder, William Peace.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Jake Patterson, Methodist - The freshman from Apex, North Carolina competed at the Elon Invitational last week in the discus. He posted a new personal-best 37.19-meter effort to place 13th out of 33 competitors. Also Nominated: Austin Weber, Berea.

Men's Track Rookie of the Week
Antuan Crowder, William Peace - The freshman from Oxford, Alabama competed at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational last week in two track events. He ran the 100 meters in a time of 10.98 which was good for a 15th-place finish out of 36 and was also a member of the 4x100 meter team which finished in 43.87. Also Nominated: Sair Salgado, Berea; Gavin Morgan, Brevard.

Men's Field Rookie of the Week
Jake Patterson, Methodist - The freshman from Apex, North Carolina competed at the Elon Invitational last week in the discus. He posted a new personal-best 37.19-meter effort to place 13th out of 33 competitors. Also Nominated: Austin Weber, Berea.

 

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Khatriah Malik, Berea - The sophomore from Paris, Kentucky competed at the DePauw Invitational last week in three track events. In the 100 meters she ran a time of 12.83, in the 200 meters she posted a 25.78 and notched a 49.53 as a member of the 4x100 meter relay team. Also Nominated: Essence Thomas, Meredith; Lindsey Pritchard, Methodist; Kylie Spencer, Pfeiffer; Lilly Smith, Covenant.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week
Mariah Ballen, William Peace - The junior from Raleigh, North Carolina competed at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational last week in the triple jump. She earned a mark of 10.85 meters to place fourth out of 13. Also Nominated: Destinee Henry, Berea; Demonica Stanley, Meredith; Tonishea Ford, Pfeiffer.

Women's Track Rookie of the Week
Jada Harper, Berea - The freshman from Athens, Tennessee competed at the DePauw Invitational last week in three track events. In the 100 meters she ran a time of 13.13, in the 200 meters she posted a 26.99 and notched a 49.53 as a member of the 4x100 meter relay team. Also Nominated: Mitxi Ortiz, Meredith.

Women's Field Rookie of the Week
Mariah Ballen, William Peace - The junior, in her first year of collegiate outdoor track and field, from Raleigh, North Carolina competed at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational last week in the triple jump. She earned a mark of 10.85 meters to place fourth out of 13. Also Nominated: Leta Heigley, Berea.
