DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University football seniors Joshua Tapscott and Cole Westberry both earned national recognition on the D3football.com Team of the Week, which was announced Tuesday. Tapscott was named to the team as a kick returner and Westberry as a punter.
A day earlier, Tapscott was chosen as the USA South Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in the Cougars' 28-16 win at Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday. Tapscott, a running back and return specialist from Warrenton, Virginia, took back momentum and the lead for the Cougars late in the first half as he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Tapscott ended up with 117 kickoff return yards on two attempts. He also rushed 13 times for 74 net yards, including a 52-yard run.
Westberry, a native of Youngsville, North Carolina, tied the program record for longest punt with a 69-yard boot against Hampden-Sydney and averaged 47.2 yards on seven punts. Five of his punts were pinned inside the 20.
